A quick, bite-sized review of the best new quick service restaurant on property!
Controversial hot take: quick service restaurants at Disney World undeservedly have a bad reputation. Okay, maybe not bad but less than stellar. You definitely don’t hear much buzz about a “must visit” counter service restaurant very often. Maybe about the latest Instagram-worthy snack craze, like those massive cookies at Gideon’s Bakehouse, but quick service restaurants? Not so much. Perhaps it’s because most quick service locations tend to serve up basic fare, such as chicken tenders and cheeseburgers? Nothing wrong with that at all, and in fact, spots like Cosmic Ray’s and Backlot Express have become mainstays of our visits (mothers of picky eaters, can y’all relate?). However, I recommend the quick service location, Primo Piatto, over at Disney’s Riviera resort for several reasons: tasty menu items you wouldn’t expect at the typical counter service, beautiful surroundings, all while being fast, convenient, and a fantastic value.
We stopped by the Riviera resort for a quick breakfast before heading to Hollywood Studios for the day. Before leaving our room, we pre-ordered our meal with mobile ordering on the My Disney Experience app. Given that we were staying at Pop Century, it was a short ride via the Skyliner to the Riviera resort. We strolled around, took a few pictures, and admired the beautiful tile mosaics inspired by Tangled and Peter Pan at the fountains in the courtyard before heading into Primo Piatto to pick up our breakfast.
The breakfast menu isn’t massive, but what they do have, they do well. We ordered and shared the Croque Madame and Blueberry-Lemon Pancakes. Both were hearty portions and kept us satisfied well into the day. The Croque Madame was priced at $10.79 and the menu description was “classic French ham and cheese with fried egg” and was served with your choice of bacon, sausage, or fresh fruit. The Blueberry-Lemon Pancakes were described as “three fluffy house-made pancakes filled with fresh blueberries, topped with mascarpone cream cheese and lemon zest” served with the same choice of sides. The Blueberry-Lemon Pancakes were $11.29. Both dishes tasted fresh and delicious with the bacon cooked the that perfect “crisp but not overly-done” finish that many restaurants can’t seem to master. The Croque Madame was rich, decadent, and not something I expected to see on a quick service menu! The only other time I can remember seeing this menu item at a quick service breakfast location was at Be Our Guest in the Magic Kingdom. (Can I just say that I’m still slightly salty that they’ve done away with breakfast at Be Our Guest? But I guess that’s a different conversation for a different time.) The Blueberry-Lemon Pancakes were light and fluffy with a bright citrus flavor that wasn’t overpowering at all. The mascarpone cream cheese was served on the side so you could have more or less, depending on your taste.
Sorry for the photos of our breakfast in the cardboard boxes, but this is how Disney is currently serving their quick service meals at resorts during the pandemic. At least the meals come safely covered and boxed up and they aren’t in plastic containers for sustainability reasons, but they certainly aren’t as photogenic. Priorities, am I right?
Other breakfast options were the Continental Breakfast consisting of a croissant, fresh fruit, and your choice of yogurt or overnight oats for $7.99 and the Primo Piatto Breakfast Platter which included scrambled eggs served over mascarpone polenta, a sweet brioche roll with bacon and sausage for $10.79. There’s also a plant based option of plant-based eggs with grilled vegetables and plant-based Italian sausage for $10.79. Other a la carte options were available if you didn’t want an entire entree and included bacon, overnight oats, sausage, regular Italian sausage as well as the plant-based Italian sausage ranging from $2.99 to $5.29. Kids’ menu items included a Mickey waffle with apple slices and a Danimals smoothie and a Primo Platter similar to the adult menu version with apple slices and Danimals smoothie in place of bacon and sausage. The kids’ meals are priced at $6.79 and $6.99, respectively.
Primo Piatto also offers lunch, dinner, bakery items, and snacks. They currently are offering a Valentine’s Day Cinnamon Candy cupcake and a Sparking Wine and Chocolate Ganache celebration package. Desserts include tiramisu and gelato, while snack options range from cookies to a charcuterie plate. Primo Piatto is great to stop by on your way to Epcot or Hollywood Studios or as a quick service alternative to other resorts on the Skyliner.
